The dragon is the oldest mythic creature on earth. Every culture has one. Not because they copied each other — because something in human consciousness recognises the dragon.
Dragons don’t need wings. The oldest dragons — the Vedic Ahi, the Chinese Long, the Aboriginal Rainbow Serpent — are serpentine. They swim through water, through earth, through consciousness itself. Wings were a European addition. The original dragon is a cosmic serpent.
Vedic
Rig Veda 1.32 calls Vritra “first-born of dragons” — a chaos serpent slain by Indra’s thunderbolt to free the world’s waters.
Chinese
The Long embodies yang energy — paired with phoenix (yin) to represent cosmic balance. Five claws for the emperor.
Aboriginal
The Rainbow Serpent created rivers and valleys as it moved across the land. Wingless. Older than any recorded mythology.
Cosmic
Jeremy Narby found that ayahuasca shamans worldwide see twin serpents resembling DNA’s double helix. The serpent is life itself.
The word “dragon” comes from Greek drakon — “to see clearly.” The dragon is not the monster. The dragon is the clear sight.
